Composed in 1893 during Dvořák’s stay in the United States as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, the symphony reflects his impressions of the American landscape, culture, and people.\nWhile not directly quoting Native American or African American melodies, Dvořák was deeply inspired by their spirit and rhythms, which he believed represented the true musical voice of America. The result is a powerful fusion of American themes and European symphonic tradition. The second movement, with its famous English horn solo, evokes a poignant sense of longing and homesickness, while the finale brims with energy, recalling earlier themes and bringing the work to a thrilling close.\nPremiered at Carnegie Hall in December 1893, the New World Symphony was an instant success and continues to resonate with audiences around the world. Its blend of lyricism, rhythmic vitality, and emotional depth make it a compelling centrepiece for any concert program.\nWe are delighted to present young musician Morgan Bland from Wells Cathedral School who will be performing with us for this fantastic trombone concerto.\nLauny Grøndahl’s Trombone Concerto, composed in 1924, is a cornerstone of the trombone repertoire. Written while the Danish composer was traveling in Italy, the piece showcases the lyrical and technical range of the instrument. From the noble, sweeping melodies of the opening movement to the expressive, song-like second movement and the brilliant, energetic finale, the concerto highlights the trombone’s versatility and emotional depth. Grøndahl wrote the piece for the principal trombonist of the Copenhagen Symphony Orchestra, and it has since become a favourite among soloists and audiences alike. Prepare to hear the trombone in a whole new light.\nJean Sibelius’s En Saga, composed in 1892 and revised in 1902, is a tone poem rich in atmosphere and Nordic character. Though the title means “A Saga,” Sibelius didn’t tie the music to any specific story, instead aiming to evoke the spirit of Finnish mythology and personal reflection. The piece moves through shifting moods—mysterious, brooding, and at times turbulent—showcasing Sibelius’s gift for orchestral color and emotional depth. En Saga marked a turning point in his career, establishing him as a major symphonic voice.
