SUMMARY:Frome Festival Concert 2026
DESCRIPTION:George Butterworth – A Shropshire Lad\nRobert Schumann – Piano Concerto – performed by Ezra Herring\nRalph Vaughan Williams – Symphony No 2 (London Symphony)\n\n\n\n\nThis concert forms part of the Frome Festival programme and takes place on Sunday 12 July at 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Frome.\nThe evening opens with George Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad, a hauntingly beautiful orchestral rhapsody inspired by A. E. Housman’s poetry, full of pastoral warmth and quiet melancholy. \nThis is followed by Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, one of the great Romantic concertos, performed by soloist Ezra Herring—a work of lyrical intimacy, dramatic flair, and rich dialogue between piano and orchestra.\nThe programme concludes with Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 2 (A London Symphony), a vivid and atmospheric portrait of the capital, capturing everything from bustling energy to moments of reflective calm.\n\nEzra Herring\n\nEzra Herring is a 16-year-old pianist who began playing at the age of seven. Since being awarded a full scholarship as a specialist pianist at Wells Cathedral School in 2022, he has studied with Joseph Tong, further developing his technique and musicianship. Alongside piano, Ezra is also a composer and harpsichordist, actively involved in early music performance. An avid chamber musician, he most recently performed in a concert featuring Antonín Dvořák’s Dumky Trio. \nAt Wells, Ezra has performed extensively in the lunchtime concert series and, last year, curated a recital programme in collaboration with a percussionist. He also played in The Firebird Suite with the Wells Cathedral School Symphony Orchestra. In May this year, he was selected as a finalist in the school’s concerto competition, performing Schumann’s Piano Concerto. \nOutside of school, Ezra has appeared in various solo and chamber recitals. These include a performance at the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution, presenting a programme dedicated entirely to music by African composers, accompanying violinist Emma Steenkamp, and a full-length solo recital at Christ Church, Frome as a part of the Frome Kindness Festival, raising funds in support of the Sierra Leone Project. \nIn the future, Ezra hopes to study at a music conservatoire and continue pursuing his passion for music, with the ambition of becoming a professional concert pianist. He is delighted to have the opportunity to perform Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Frome Symphony Orchestra.\n———\n\nTogether, these works offer an evocative journey through English and Romantic orchestral music in the resonant setting of Holy Trinity Church.\n\n\n\n\nTickets are available through this website and also at the Cheese & Grain Box Office. Tickets purchased through this website can be printed at home or just turn up with the email ticket with the QR code. Ticket sales via this website close 4 hours before the concert. You can also purchase tickets on the door on the night (subject to availabilty).\nIF YOU HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH TICKETS PLEASE EMAIL TICKETS@FROMESYMPHONY.ORG.UK ( mailto:TICKETS@FROMESYMPHONY.ORG.UK )\n
